On the first day of the 15th session of the IMO Sub-Committee on Radiocommunications, Search and Rescue, a ceremony took place to celebrate the expansion of the World-Wide Navigational Warning System (WWNWS) into Arctic waters.

Wayfarer Open at Bough Beech Sailing Club

19 Wayfarers found themselves on the start line at Bough Beech Sailing Club, on 8th & 9th November, for the final event of the National Circuit Series. With the Sevenoaks Weald to their sterns, they faced 8 kts of tricky shifting south westerly breeze, and although conditions were at first, more moderate than originally forecast the overcast sky, was a portent of more interesting things to come.

74 year-old Minoru Saito, on his eighth circumnavigation, after 38 days from Yokohama has reached the coastline of Australia, and is travelling south roughly parallel with the coast. Sailors on the east coast of Australia, watch out for Saito-San, surely one of the most incredible sailors in all leisure sailing history.

The October shot in the 2009 Fotoboat was taken by Heather Davies at the Firefly Nationals at Royal Torbay Yacht Club and shows Bram Appleton & Laura White from Sheffield University SC enjoying a lively reach. 2008 was the summer that never really was, but was also the year the Fireflies returned to the venue of the 1948 Olympics where racing took place in Fireflies.

Illusion Guy Fawkes Trophy at Bembridge Sailing Club

Saturday was windy; force six to seven, but that didn΄t stop the Illusion fleet going afloat. The nine intrepid sailors managed two races. It may, however, be argued that the four race officers had a harder time of it. Bruce Huber, Rudy Jurg and Mark Downer finished one, two, three in both flights.
RS200 South East Area Series Round Up

Burghfield Sailing Club saw the close of the RS200 South East Area Circuit with its open on the 25th of September. This was the 8th event in a fantastic series of one day events around the South East in which 106 boats competed. Turnouts were over 20 all year with 33 boats at biggest event.

XOD Autumn Series at Royal Lymington Yacht Club

With varying wind conditions from force 1 to 6, twenty-one XODs took part in their Autumn Series during October including two visiting boats from Cowes on the Isle of Wight, Chris Caws in Foxglove (X174) and Neil Payne in Quest (X53). But it was Lymington boats that were the victors Ado Jardine in Lucrezia (X140) edging out William Norris in Beatrix (X178) for the top places overall.
Autumn Junior Regatta at Christchurch Sailing Club

Christchurch Sailing Club’s Autumn Junior Regatta took place from 29th to 31st October. 10 young sailors from Mudeford, Highcliffe & Christchurch Sailing Clubs braved icy conditions to take part in the 3 day event, held during the half-term holiday.
Tempest ’Last Blast’ at Carsington Sailing Club

The last weekend in October saw one Tempest from Ullswater YC and two from Arun YC join the fleet at CSC for the final ‘Tempest’ event of the year ‘The Last Blast. This was held over two days. A disappointing final entry of only 7 had the enjoyment of another really good ‘Last Blast’ with winds of 14 to 15 knots gusting towards 22+ on Saturday and Sunday.
